Theory/research Watch the following link which talks about the impact of our past on who we are today. The video is called 'Mod 2 The Past'. We need to learn from the past with a positive perspective and then move forward again. The past is like the review mirror in a car. The review mirror is only about 10% of the driver's vision. Yes, we need to know where we have come from and what is coming up from behind, but if we focus on that 10% majority of the time we are increasing our chances of causing an accident and injuring not just yourself but also others on the road. Week 5Explanation of weekly task
This week will aim to teach you how to live a healthy and happy life through an attitude of gratefulness towards life. Theory/research In her video 'Finding Happiness', Trixie James explains the concept of happiness. James referred to Sonia Lyubomirsky's 'Happiness Pie' which states that our genetics (50% of the pie) will determine what the criteria of happiness is for you; our circumstances (10%) only makes a small proportion of the pie; while the remaining 40% is referred to our intentional activities. So, though over half of the pie is out of our control, we still have the power to influence our level of happiness. One of such activities is having an optimistic and grateful attitude towards life. But this will take work. James quoted research which said that we are predisposed to be negative to everything; so, the task of being optimistic and grateful is foreign and a lot of hard work but it is achievable. Theory/research Watch the video 'Mod 2: Values and Meanings' and 'Mod 2: Values + Goal = Meaning'. James defined values as our principles which we use to navigate us through life. Our values help to give us clarity and focus on our daily tasks. If our values and actions/activities are aligned, they will give our life meaning and purpose. In the second video, James stresses the important of aligning our goals and values in order to create meaning in our lives. To create goals, we need to first start where we want to end. So daydream and visualise yourself somewhere in the future. Once you have done this and have determined where you are going, you can now make a plan and set goals/steps on how you are going to get to your destination. It is very important to plan for your future. As James puts it, 'happy people make things happen' they do not just wait for things to fall into their laps.
